SchoolsView Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) for Modern Students

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making skills needed to succeed in school, work, and life. SEL is essential for all students, but it is especially important for young learners who are still developing their social and emotional skills.

Mood Meter is a simple but effective tool that can be used to support SEL in schools. Mood Meter is a four-quadrant chart that helps students identify and express their emotions. The four quadrants are:

  • Green: Safe, Respected, Relaxed, and Joyful.
  • Yellow: Hyper, Focused, Proud, and Excited.
  • Blue: Bored, Exhausted, Sad, and Lonely.
  • Red: Irritated, Anxious, Frustrated, and Furious.

Students can use Mood Meter to check in with themselves throughout the day and to communicate their emotions to their teachers and classmates.

This can help students to develop their self-awareness and to learn how to manage their emotions effectively. along side the support of guidance counselors, and teachers.

We rely on the color spectrum to visualize, and animate the mood selections for an intuitive, and engaging experience.

The color blue represents both the sky and the sea and is associated with open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration, and sensitivity. Blue also represents meanings of depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, and intelligence.

Since red is the color of blood, it has historically been associated with sacrifice, danger, and courage. Modern surveys in Europe and the United States show red is also the color most commonly associated with heat, activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love, and joy.

Yellow is a color associated with the sun. It symbolizes optimism, energy, joy, happiness and friendship. It might also stand for intellect. On the contrary, yellow can indicate jealousy, betrayal, illness and danger. It is strongly associated with food, often evoking cheerful feelings.

For many people, the color green means nature and brings to mind lush grass, trees, and forests. Green is often described as refreshing and tranquil. Other common associations with the color green are money, luck, health, and envy.

The color purple is generally associated with royalty, luxury, nobility, power, and ambition. Purple is also used to represent creativity, extravagance, dignity, grandeur, independence, pride, peace, mystery, and magic.

Orange can have both positive and negative connotations, depending on the individual. On the plus side, people often associated orange with optimism, confidence, enthusiasm, warmth, and agreeableness. Because it is a bright and vivacious color, it may help people feel outgoing or even bold.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process that helps students develop the skills they need to manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL is important for all students, but it is especially important for students in the modern classroom. The modern classroom is a complex and ever-changing environment. Students are faced with new challenges every day, and they need the skills to cope with these challenges effectively. SEL can help students develop these skills and succeed in school and beyond.

We developed a SEL educational plan that is designed to meet the needs of students in the modern classroom. The plan is based on the latest research on SEL, and it is aligned with the New York State Standards. The plan includes a variety of activities and resources that can be used by teachers to help students develop SEL skills.

Modern Mood Meter Motivators

Students oftentimes need, guidance, and motivation to take part in new unfamiliar task. Therefore, we integrated a modern system that awards a point to student who share their moods, and a badge assigned by the teacher up to the “Mood Expert” badge so far.

Our mood Meter is not simply an emotion tracking tool to improve students’ overall wellbeing, it is also, a motivator. We have a reward system that encourages students to share their emotions. Similar to other platforms, teachers can award points and badges to their students based on participation and other task.
